Amsterdam

By canal boat we explore the new Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam . For many years, the area formed an important part of the flourishing port of Amsterdam , but it lost its function in the seventies. Since the Amsterdam City Council decided to realize a new high-density residential district in this area, different urban designers and supervisors gave each neighbourhood its own distinctive character. The final result is a reflection of the changing views of possibilities in the fields of urban design, architecture and public housing.

We will have lunch in a historic building, the Lloyd Hotel (1918), which have been given a new function. It has been a hotel for emigrants, a prison and a living quarter and workplace for artists. Recently it was converted into a hotel for artists an art lovers . A special tour after our lunch in this remarkable hotel shows how nowadays they lodge guests in specially designed rooms.

Finally, we pay a visit to the world-known van Gogh Museum where Edwin Becker, the curator of the museum, will welcome us and give us a special tour through the museum.
